Written By Regina Kim on Friday, May 31, 2013 | 3:24 AM

On the recent episode of tvN’s “Baek Ji Yeon’s People Inside,” which was aired on May 29, group 4minute explained how hard it is to be an idol.

The youngest member Kwon So Hyun stated, “Idols begin their career at very early ages. Because of this, they lose their innocence early and grow up very fast.”

She continued, “I myself have lost a lot of immaturity. There were things that my friends could feel that I couldn’t. I learned at an early age what it is like to live in the real world among adults. I missed out on school field trips and after-school activities. When my friends were having fun, I had to train.”

Jeon Jiyoon also added, “When I talk to my friends, the subjects I am interested in are very different than what my friends find interesting. They also think very differently. I felt sad, because we led such different lives with vastly different problems.”

130531 HyunA Reveals That PSY Was Her Role Model 12 Years Ago Before "Gangnam Style"

4Minute member HyunA recently revealed that PSY had been her role model even before she met him.

On May 29, HyunA shared on tvN‘s talk show “Baek Ji Yeon’s People Inside” that she was inspired to become a singer when she was PSY’s incredible energy and presence on stage.

While talking about how she got the opportunity to appear on PSY’s “Gangnam Style” music video, she revealed, “When I was in 3rd grade, I saw PSY performing for the first time and was inspired to pursue my dream as a singer.”

When asked why she picked PSY as a role model, she replied, “I really liked his energy.”

She also went on to describe what it was like working with PSY, stating, “It was awkward at first. But he was always taking care of me on the side. ‘Gangnam Style’ really does have a great energy to it. I always thought the lyrics and dance were a lot of fun, but I never imagined that it would get as popular as it did.”

Netizens who saw the broadcast commented, “PSY and HyunA are both pretty amazing”, “HyunA’s ‘Horse Dance’ is sexy!” and “Wow, HyunA was PSY’s fan since 12 years ago?”

130530 4minute HyunA Opens Up About Her Three Personal Flaws

During an episode of tvN talk show ‘People Inside’ 4minute’s HyunA shared her personal flaws she has trouble overcoming. Known for her honesty, HyunA surprised the host and many viewers who are not used to hearing an idol artist openly talk about what haunts her the most.

The three things she revealed were alcohol, cheek bones and voice. Because of her prominent cheek bones, HyunA said that she always turns sideways at the camera before posing for a smile and such.

About alcohol, she said, “I look like I could drink gallons of alcohol, but in reality, I can’t drink. My face turns crimson red after just a shot of alcohol. Of course, I get made fun of all the time.”

Lastly, she revealed that her voice “lacks elegance and sounds like a comical woodpecker in cartoons. People often don’t recognize me when no cameras are around but they realize it is me as soon as I speak. I am jealous of classy voices like Baek Ji Yun, the host of the show.”

She also added that she does not have any close celebrity friends. She explained that 4minute members are very introverted and like to keep things in-house even when they are hanging out during free time.

The episode of ‘People Inside’ will air on May 29.

She went on, “My voice sounds undignified and like a woodpecker. Whenever I go outside, people can’t guess who I am, but they immediately know who I am when I open my mouth. I envy deep voices like Baek Ji Yeon’s.”

Meanwhile, the other members revealed that they don’t have any super close celebrity friends.

4Minute jumped into the number one position on Billboard Magazine’s K-Pop Hot 100 chart this week, with their in-your-face single “What’s Your Name.”

After climbing to number two last week, 4Minute’s “What’s Your Name” ended “Superstar K4″ winner Roy Kim’s three-week run in the top spot on the Billboard K-pop chart.

South Korean R&B group VIBE debuts in the number three slot last week, with their sensitive ballad “As I’m Getting Older.”

Vibe is currently dominating the charts with two other songs in the K-pop top 20.

Their single “For The Last Time” is at number 13 in its third week and “Don’t Listen To This Song If You’re Under 19″ featuring MIIII debuted at number 15.

VIBE’s fifth album “Organic Sound” was released on May 15.

For the first time since its debut on the Billboard K-Pop Hot 100 chart six weeks ago, Psy saw his new single “Gentleman” fall out of the top 10.

The rapper’s record-breaking follow up to “Gangnam Style” dropped to number 12 this week.

Yet for Lee Hyori, things on the Billboard Magazine’s K-pop chart keep getting better.

Her song “Miss Korea” remains at number 3 in its third week on the charts and possibly boosted by its action-packed music video, Lee’s single “Bad Girls” breaks into the charts at number 25.

Entitled “Monochrome,” the fifth Lee Hyori album debuted on Tuesday.

After a five-year hiatus K-pop’s longest running idol group SHINHWA is back in the top 10 with their new single “This Love,” which debuted at number five.

SHINHWA’s album “THE CLASSIC,” was also released on Tuesday, garnering major record sales in Japan and South Korea.

“THE CLASSIC” is currently ranked number one on the Hanteo and Japan Tower Records charts.

“[SHINHWA] have shown their popularity and power of being an idol group for 15 years,” a representative for the band’s record label said on Thursday.

“All their hard work and efforts throughout these years have allowed them to continue to rank high.”

The performers on the show that day included the gifted and well-coordinated piano sisters who used chopsticks to create a beautiful melody. After seeing them perform, HyunA asked, “While performing together, you’re bound to have a difference in opinion – how do you resolve them and work together?”

MC Kang Ho Dong then turned the question over to them saying, “Well, how does 4Minute make group decisions?” to which HyunA replied, “No matter what, we’ll always go with what the majority wants. If we can’t establish a majority of votes, then we settle things with rock-paper-scissors.”

After being hospitalized, HyunA shed tears after returning to the stage with 4minute.

130513 4minute keep their place on top of the music charts for 3 consecutive weeks

Written By Regina Kim on Monday, May 13, 2013 | 8:24 PM

4minute has been taking over the charts for 3 weeks.

The ladies swept the charts with “What’s Your Name?“, which isn’t a surprise for a high caliber group like 4minute. However, what was surprising was that they managed to keep their high placement on the charts for 3 straight weeks.

It’s currently #1 on charts such as Melon, even with heavy competition and big names like 2PM, SECRET, B1A4, T-ara N4, and others having released their latest songs.

“What’s Your Name?” has honest and rebellious lyrics combined with an addicting hip hop sound that has swept listeners off their feet.

Congratulations to 4minute with their success for “What’s Your Name?”!

130511 4Minute Sohyun, Sunggyu, and Bang Yong Guk impress with their academic accomplishments on ‘Infinity Challenge’

4minute‘s Sohyun, INFINITE‘s Sunggyu, and B.A.P‘s Bang Yong Guk were revealed to be one of the smartest among the 30 idols featured on the latest episode of ‘Infinity Challenge‘.

MC Yoo Jae Suk asked 4minute, “Which member did the best in school?”, and leader Jihyun pointed to maknae Sohyun. Sohyun surprised the other idols by revealing, “I ranked #4 in my class.” Yoo Jae Suk then asked the 30 idols, “Is there anyone here who achieved higher than fourth place?”

Sunggyu raised his hand and shared, “Although it’s weird to say this about myself, I achieved #2 out of my entire school.” Yoo Jae Suk responded, “You must have been very good at studying”, to which Sunggyu hilariously answered, “That’s right.”

Yoo Jae Suk raised the bar higher and asked, “Is there anyone who achieved higher than 2nd place?”, to which Bang Yong Guk raised his hand and shared, “I placed #1 among 800 students during my 2nd year of high school”, impressing everyone on set.

During the idol special, 30 idols split into 11 teams with each ‘Infinity Challenge’ member becoming their teacher. They also received special lessons from the cast, who lectured in their own individual way to teach them Korean history.

130512 4Minute's "Name is 4Minute" album review

After Hyuna‘s solo promotions with “Ice Cream”, and straight after the debut of2Yoon with “24/7″, 4Minute‘s comeback feels little like a comeback at all. So used to seeing 3/5 of the members actively promote (poor Jihyun and Sohyun), it’s interesting to note how Cube tackles the comeback for the group as a whole. Hyuna’s mini-albums are typical, more for the sake of padding and giving her solo career some meat. 2Yoon’s “Harvest Moon” however, was definitely one of the stronger things put out by anything related to 4Minute.

Cube does deserve credit where it’s due. They use their sub-units wisely, and both 2Yoon and Hyuna’s promotional material and concept are distinctly far from what 4Minute offers with their latest mini-album “Name is 4Minute.” For better, but mostly for worse.

4Minute’s intro songs never fail to leave an impression on me, and relatively they’re almost always one of the stronger parts of the albums. “What’s My Name?” as it is, serves as a strong build up to the album as a whole. The instrumental, with it’s rythmic thumping and electric guitar, creates an underlying intensity throughout the track but unfortunately it’s never released. The production on this track, in particular the treatment of the vocals, are a let down. 2Yoon’s vocals are too clear and unpolished against the grittiness of the song, and become uncomfortably salient during their interceptions.

If anything can be said about “Whatever”, it’s that although it definitely seems composed to be a “stage” song, it sounds a lot better on the album where Gayoon and Jiyoon’s shrill voices are tamed down and made smooth. “Whatever” pulls off the concept of being dynamic and “quirky” a lot better than “What’s Your Name?” does, but doesn’t completely do it justice. The abrupt shift around the 1:02 mark does the track no favours, and the delivery itself lacks conviction to keep the song grounded. There’s a great tune going on for the first minute, but then the rest of the song is slapped over a beat taken right out of “I Got a Boy”‘s dance break. You can only imagine how long you can actually listen to that for. It’s a shame because in this case, maybe a little less thinking and “creativity” would have made this more of a standout song.

“Gimme That” is a 4Minute song through and through, and there are probably better derivatives of it tucked away somewhere in the depth’s of their discography. Really, it’s a poorer version of “Who’s Next”, and sounds like an intro song extended for much too long.

The album’s highlight comes in the form of “Domino,” a fun pop song that’s similar to “24/7″ in being simplistically creative in it’s fusion of pop with more traditional sounds. Domino is a pop song through and through, but to hear those violin samples dispersed throughout the song gives it a very unique flair. Youthful and playful, with subtle and discreet shifts in tone, it makes an exciting and cohesive pop song. The vocal treatment on this song is perfect. With the song’s rhythm oud, rapid, and high energy all the way through, 2Yoon’s voices are at peace and never once strained with unnecessary ad-libs and long notes. The distribution of lines between the other three members a lot more even and better-assigned as well.
We come to “What’s Your Name?”, 4Minute’s first title track to be produced by Brave Brothers. The song shows potential to be well done, the initial ambience of the song, with it’s warped radar and hovering bleeps fit in snugly with the entire mini-album’s “Jungle” visual aesthetic. Unfortunately, that’s really as far as the positives go. The song is flat and cheaply structured together. None of the individual elements themselves are particularly memorable, the transitions are crudely placed, and as a result you near the end of the song without anything actually happening. The sole serving grace comes with Gayoon‘s pre-chorus, melodic and cheery enough to stand on it’s own. But unfortunately it’s almost too good for the song and just serves to make the track more disjointed than it already is. As a whole “What’s Your Name?” is 4Minute’s poorest title track to date, seeing how it’s less of a song and more of a gigantic musical blur.

As for the album as a whole, with the exception of the slip-up in the introduction and “Whatever”, it’s great to note that Cube has finally figured out how to properly do A&R for 2Yoon’s voices. Sohyun can also be heard more in this title track, and although not exactly a very talented vocalist or rapper, it’s nice to see her contributing something to 4Minute and her effort definitely transfers well to her performance live. Hyuna will be Hyuna, questionably over-saturated but commanding attention in a way most K-pop idols only wish they would. Jihyun unfortunately remains the weakest link in 4Minute’s music, and after 4 years it’s sad to say it doesn’t look like she’s showing any signs of improving.

Unfortunately, the album as a whole feels poorly thought out and put together. The title track “What’s Your Name” doesn’t fit in very well with the rest of the mini, and most of the other songs never reach their full potential due to poor execution and delivery. It feels like 4Minute are stil stumbling around in these albums until they somehow manage to hit a track that works for them. As a result there are some high points, but for a band 4 years into their careers it’s blatantly underwhelming.

Best Song: Domino
Other Highlights: Whatever
Worst Song: Gimme That, What’s Your Name?

Overall: 3/5
