Written By Regina Kim on Tuesday, May 21, 2013 | 4:05 AM

Recently on May 19, on an online community bulletin board, two photos were uploaded under the title, “Nam Ji Hyun, she had a close call during a live show.”

The pictures are the captured images of 4Minute from the recent episode of KBS’s “Music Bank,” which was aired on May 17. In the photos is Nam Ji Hyun during her part of the song. Her bra had been unhooked and part of it can be seen peaking outside her sleeveless shirt. Fortunately, the performance was carried out successfully, but it could have been disastrous for Nam Ji Hyun.

Netizens that saw these images commented, “They need to be more careful with their costumes,” and “It could’ve been really bad.”

Meanwhile, 4Minute is having a great success with new song “What’s Your Name.”

130520 4minute Reveals How They Make Decisions As a Group

Written By Regina Kim on Monday, May 20, 2013 | 12:01 AM

On May 18, 4minute made a guest appearance on SBS‘s “Star King” and revealed how they make decisions as a group.

The performers on the show that day included the gifted and well-coordinated piano sisters who used chopsticks to create a beautiful melody. After seeing them perform, HyunA asked, “While performing together, you’re bound to have a difference in opinion – how do you resolve them and work together?”

MC Kang Ho Dong then turned the question over to them saying, “Well, how does 4Minute make group decisions?” to which HyunA replied, “No matter what, we’ll always go with what the majority wants. If we can’t establish a majority of votes, then we settle things with rock-paper-scissors.”

MC Kang Ho Dong then joked while playing rock-paper-scissors, “I win. Your next title track will be called, ‘Boom Up!’” causing everyone to laugh.

130516 HyunA sheds tears after returning on ‘M! Countdown’

Written By Regina Kim on Thursday, May 16, 2013 | 10:03 PM

After being hospitalized, HyunA shed tears after returning to the stage with 4minute.

4minute won ‘M! Countdown‘ two weeks in a row with “What’s Your Name?“, but this win was a little more special because HyunA had returned from her hospital stay. She’s been sick for a bit, but she’d fully recovered to stand on stage.

When they won, she started wiping at her eyes because she was so touched, and the other members hugged her to make her feel better. Jihyun said, “We’re happy to win #1 for 2 weeks in a row since our comeback. We want to share this happiness with our label family. HyunA’s with us on stage today, so I think our #1 is more meaningful. Thank you.”

Congratulations to 4minute, and welcome back HyunA!

130513 4minute keep their place on top of the music charts for 3 consecutive weeks

Written By Regina Kim on Monday, May 13, 2013 | 8:24 PM

4minute has been taking over the charts for 3 weeks.

The ladies swept the charts with “What’s Your Name?“, which isn’t a surprise for a high caliber group like 4minute. However, what was surprising was that they managed to keep their high placement on the charts for 3 straight weeks.

It’s currently #1 on charts such as Melon, even with heavy competition and big names like 2PM, SECRET, B1A4, T-ara N4, and others having released their latest songs.

“What’s Your Name?” has honest and rebellious lyrics combined with an addicting hip hop sound that has swept listeners off their feet.

Congratulations to 4minute with their success for “What’s Your Name?”!

130511 4Minute Sohyun, Sunggyu, and Bang Yong Guk impress with their academic accomplishments on ‘Infinity Challenge’

4minute‘s Sohyun, INFINITE‘s Sunggyu, and B.A.P‘s Bang Yong Guk were revealed to be one of the smartest among the 30 idols featured on the latest episode of ‘Infinity Challenge‘.

MC Yoo Jae Suk asked 4minute, “Which member did the best in school?”, and leader Jihyun pointed to maknae Sohyun. Sohyun surprised the other idols by revealing, “I ranked #4 in my class.” Yoo Jae Suk then asked the 30 idols, “Is there anyone here who achieved higher than fourth place?”

Sunggyu raised his hand and shared, “Although it’s weird to say this about myself, I achieved #2 out of my entire school.” Yoo Jae Suk responded, “You must have been very good at studying”, to which Sunggyu hilariously answered, “That’s right.”

Yoo Jae Suk raised the bar higher and asked, “Is there anyone who achieved higher than 2nd place?”, to which Bang Yong Guk raised his hand and shared, “I placed #1 among 800 students during my 2nd year of high school”, impressing everyone on set.

During the idol special, 30 idols split into 11 teams with each ‘Infinity Challenge’ member becoming their teacher. They also received special lessons from the cast, who lectured in their own individual way to teach them Korean history.

130512 4Minute's "Name is 4Minute" album review

After Hyuna‘s solo promotions with “Ice Cream”, and straight after the debut of2Yoon with “24/7″, 4Minute‘s comeback feels little like a comeback at all. So used to seeing 3/5 of the members actively promote (poor Jihyun and Sohyun), it’s interesting to note how Cube tackles the comeback for the group as a whole. Hyuna’s mini-albums are typical, more for the sake of padding and giving her solo career some meat. 2Yoon’s “Harvest Moon” however, was definitely one of the stronger things put out by anything related to 4Minute.

Cube does deserve credit where it’s due. They use their sub-units wisely, and both 2Yoon and Hyuna’s promotional material and concept are distinctly far from what 4Minute offers with their latest mini-album “Name is 4Minute.” For better, but mostly for worse.

4Minute’s intro songs never fail to leave an impression on me, and relatively they’re almost always one of the stronger parts of the albums. “What’s My Name?” as it is, serves as a strong build up to the album as a whole. The instrumental, with it’s rythmic thumping and electric guitar, creates an underlying intensity throughout the track but unfortunately it’s never released. The production on this track, in particular the treatment of the vocals, are a let down. 2Yoon’s vocals are too clear and unpolished against the grittiness of the song, and become uncomfortably salient during their interceptions.

If anything can be said about “Whatever”, it’s that although it definitely seems composed to be a “stage” song, it sounds a lot better on the album where Gayoon and Jiyoon’s shrill voices are tamed down and made smooth. “Whatever” pulls off the concept of being dynamic and “quirky” a lot better than “What’s Your Name?” does, but doesn’t completely do it justice. The abrupt shift around the 1:02 mark does the track no favours, and the delivery itself lacks conviction to keep the song grounded. There’s a great tune going on for the first minute, but then the rest of the song is slapped over a beat taken right out of “I Got a Boy”‘s dance break. You can only imagine how long you can actually listen to that for. It’s a shame because in this case, maybe a little less thinking and “creativity” would have made this more of a standout song.

“Gimme That” is a 4Minute song through and through, and there are probably better derivatives of it tucked away somewhere in the depth’s of their discography. Really, it’s a poorer version of “Who’s Next”, and sounds like an intro song extended for much too long.

The album’s highlight comes in the form of “Domino,” a fun pop song that’s similar to “24/7″ in being simplistically creative in it’s fusion of pop with more traditional sounds. Domino is a pop song through and through, but to hear those violin samples dispersed throughout the song gives it a very unique flair. Youthful and playful, with subtle and discreet shifts in tone, it makes an exciting and cohesive pop song. The vocal treatment on this song is perfect. With the song’s rhythm oud, rapid, and high energy all the way through, 2Yoon’s voices are at peace and never once strained with unnecessary ad-libs and long notes. The distribution of lines between the other three members a lot more even and better-assigned as well.
We come to “What’s Your Name?”, 4Minute’s first title track to be produced by Brave Brothers. The song shows potential to be well done, the initial ambience of the song, with it’s warped radar and hovering bleeps fit in snugly with the entire mini-album’s “Jungle” visual aesthetic. Unfortunately, that’s really as far as the positives go. The song is flat and cheaply structured together. None of the individual elements themselves are particularly memorable, the transitions are crudely placed, and as a result you near the end of the song without anything actually happening. The sole serving grace comes with Gayoon‘s pre-chorus, melodic and cheery enough to stand on it’s own. But unfortunately it’s almost too good for the song and just serves to make the track more disjointed than it already is. As a whole “What’s Your Name?” is 4Minute’s poorest title track to date, seeing how it’s less of a song and more of a gigantic musical blur.

As for the album as a whole, with the exception of the slip-up in the introduction and “Whatever”, it’s great to note that Cube has finally figured out how to properly do A&R for 2Yoon’s voices. Sohyun can also be heard more in this title track, and although not exactly a very talented vocalist or rapper, it’s nice to see her contributing something to 4Minute and her effort definitely transfers well to her performance live. Hyuna will be Hyuna, questionably over-saturated but commanding attention in a way most K-pop idols only wish they would. Jihyun unfortunately remains the weakest link in 4Minute’s music, and after 4 years it’s sad to say it doesn’t look like she’s showing any signs of improving.

Unfortunately, the album as a whole feels poorly thought out and put together. The title track “What’s Your Name” doesn’t fit in very well with the rest of the mini, and most of the other songs never reach their full potential due to poor execution and delivery. It feels like 4Minute are stil stumbling around in these albums until they somehow manage to hit a track that works for them. As a result there are some high points, but for a band 4 years into their careers it’s blatantly underwhelming.

Best Song: Domino
Other Highlights: Whatever
Worst Song: Gimme That, What’s Your Name?

Overall: 3/5

130508 2YOON ‘flower bomb’ the cover of ‘CeCi Thailand’

Written By Regina Kim on Wednesday, May 8, 2013 | 3:28 AM

2YOON became the first female subunit to promote in Thailand so it’s no surprise that they’ve landed themselves on the cover of ‘CeCi Thailand‘!

2YOON took on the concept of ‘flower bombs’ for the magazine which called for the use of flower detailing on their headpieces and hats. The duo also differentiated themselves with Gayoon showing a more girly image in her dress, while the other ‘yoon’, Jiyoon, donned overalls for a more tomboy feel.
